Exploring the Subject of Grants for Writers

If you’re an aspiring writer then you know that making money can be tough. In fact, if you’re a freelancer, you might find that it is extremely difficult to make a living wage writing. So, what do you do? Do you give up your dreams and aspirations of writing or do you find another way to boost your income? Well, if you’re really serious about your career then of course, you continue to live your dreams. You find a way to make your dreams a reality and finding a grant specifically for writers may in fact be the way to go. Here’s 5 tips to help you find a grant if you’re a writer.

1. Conduct online research.

There are numerous online research sources that you can use to find a suitable grant. Simply type in the words “grants for writer” and you’ll come up with numerous search results.

2. Do a little offline research too.

Check out books like the Writer’s Market and other sources for writers as they typically list grants and other compensation that are available to writers.

3. Ask for referrals.

Ask other writers and family members for referrals. Many of them might know about unadvertised grant opportunities that you can in fact take advantage of. The key is to not be shy. Tell everyone that you’re looking for a grant to support your writing dreams. After all, you never know who knows whom and plenty of grants have been found from networking opportunities.

4. Don’t fall for scams.

There are many unscrupulous scam artists out there preying on honest people so be careful about the types of grants that you apply for. A bad sign is an organization that requires you to pay money upfront as you should never have to “pay upfront” to apply. You may even want to check with the Better Business Bureau to make sure that no complaints have been filed before you fill out your application.

5. Apply and follow the guidelines.

Once you’ve found a great grant prospect, make sure you apply. Pay special attention to stated deadlines and make sure that you include all necessary information so that you don’t delay the application process.

In conclusion, finding a grant isn’t difficult but it takes a bit of time and effort. Just make sure that you conduct online and offline research, ask for referrals, don’t fall for bogus scams, and follow the deadlines/application deadlines. By doing this, you can find a grant and receive the money that you need to make your dreams of a professional and well paid writer a reality.
